Hey there,

thank you so much for the watches. I'm sorry I haven't been on deviantart much, so I haven't given my personal thanks to watches for the past year :s. I am in the middle of trying to sort my life out (career wise), so I have been pretty 'off the grid' for the past year.

I'll still contribute work every so often. Thank you again!

12K Kiriban

Congratulations amaterasu111 (and thanks for taking the time) for the screenshot grab!!
^_^ waiting on your request, and I'll try not to spend too long on it. Since :iconamaterasu111: is a fellow 3D artist, I'm willing to do a bit of 3D for her :D do check out her amazing environment art!

~~UPDATE 12/11/12- What's been going on!~~

So here's the thing, a couple of junior modellers were chosen to spend 2/3 more weeks at Tonto, and I was among the chosen, so I'm still busy! Haha. There was a nice wrap party, as for this studio- the work is finished and everything will be left in the hands of Pixomondo and Startz Entertainment. :) It's been a good experience, and hopefully I will have more opportunities to work with Tonto.

I haven't been totally inactive, In January 7th 2013 I'll be starting up my first permanent job as a Junior Generalist Artist at Caperfly. It's all the way in Leamington Spa, and I'm a little sad moving away so far for this job. I'm really happy I finally got a permanent job, just it's a shame it couldn't be somehow closer to home. :) I hope my irl friends can stay in touch.

After these two or three weeks I'll be starting up a bit of freelancing, mostly for 3D environments- this will be pretty exciting. :D So if anyone knows of a place I could get some work, I'd appreciate the suggestions!

Portfolio Building

Sun Jul 29, 2012, 4:35 AM
Website Portfolio Blog Twitter LinkedIN Youtube

Hey guys,

The summer has been very relaxing. My graduation was great! But since then, I've been working hard on improving my portfolio:…

I've also been looking for jobs, but after a rather recent phone call, I've been avoiding applying to anything. I was told to NOT apply until my portfolio was at its best. So, I'm really sorry I've not been submitting anything 2D for a while. I mean, for some reason I have the urge to paint a naked woman and sketch a few cartoon skits- but I don't really have time, and I can't afford to put off my portfolio.

Note about MCM Expo:

I'm predicting I won't be able to go to this event. For the reason that no matter what happens I will either not have time or the funds ;(. If I don't get a job by then, then I don't have the money to create my cosplay, and if I do get a job, then I'll most likely be too busy, because I am already going to Eurogamer (it would be kind of bad for me to take so many days off at the beginning). Sorry guys ._....
I've thought about it for some time now, and the likelihood of me going has hit bottom. My focus is completely on my career at the moment, and if I slack off for even a week or two I'm afraid everything will go down the drain.

I'll try to do a kiriban over the next month.. maybe when I hit 12k (since that won't happen for a good while haha).

Anyone have any portfolio tips for 3D artists?

As most people who know me know- I don't really go out very often anymore. I barely leave my computer as it is, with so much work to be done and limited funds, I found better ways to have fun and even socialise. But tonight I was looking forward to finally going out and hosting an awesome games night to raise funds for my uni's graduation show.
It didn't turn out that great. In fact I wish I could have gone back in time and done something different so it didn't have to end this way.

For the past few weeks I've been busy organising the end of year show, I had also decided to organise a fundraising games night and a classmate and I chose a place that had been used in previous years for fundraising. We had the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 and a variety of games on each, there was supposed to be a competition held, raffles and just plain fun, but not even thirty people turned up. I was disappointed, mostly because the absences were from the very students involved in the degree show- it was basically for them. The people who turned up made an effort to help and even brought friends over.

So what ended the night with a big bang? Some idiot decided it was okay to enter our area (it was closed off and you had to pay for wristbands to get in) for free, and continued to ignore me, pointing, laughing and no doubt being a racist piece of brainless turd.
It was not so bad when I saw him finally leave the area, he apparently 'knew' one of the randoms that had gotten in (I made his friend pay for him eventually), but then he had the nerve to bring back two orange faced scarecrows and show off his amazing 'ignorance' in front of them.
So I pushed him. Hard.
One of the horrificly tall umpa lumpas went crazy on me whilst I had an awesomly fabulous Princess Peach costume on, and destroyed it by pulling my wig off. Just imagine my pissed off face when she did that. I told them to get out- though I'm sure it was in a horribly rude fashion, since I can't even remember exactly what I said. Then they got banned from the club.

I practically ripped off the rest of my costume, and went to the bathroom, utterly and sourly disappointed with how I handled things. So tonight I express my sincere disgust- at mainly myself.

Three damn years without ever encountering a chav, and I loose my mind when I do. I must be spoiled, I'm in Britain for goodness sake.

Thank You for the Daily Deviation!!!

Got back today to check my deviantART, and I got around 270+ notifications- I got a DD! I'm really so happy, thank you all for your nice comments and faving and adding me to your watch, it's my first time. What would have otherwise been a very boring and dull day for me has turned out great :). I hope I can make another piece that's worthy for a DD again.

Another great thing is that I've purchased Photoshop CS6 with the Production Premium pack Student/Teacher edition. I finally decided I'd get it, simply because I've always used Photoshop, and this would be my last chance to get it at a discounted price. Apparently they've changed how the student version works and allows it for commercial use- it's not like anyone would find out, but still a nice nice touch. I also heard a rumour they will be changing the way licensing works on a pay monthly/rent basis. It's potentially seen a cheaper option, but I guess I prefer to just own it than worry about monthly payments.

Anyhow that's enough of my ramblings, just thought this would be useful information for any students who want to consider buying Photoshop before they graduate.

New Journal Skin and Update

Journal Skin

I'm so thrilled to have a new and customised journal skin and custom box! Thank you so much :icongillianivy: it looks amazing!!
The skin is based on my website: which you can also find as the first blue circle link by the squid header (there are six). That is so awesome! I didn't even know they were links until I put the journal skin on.

Anyone who wants a cool journal skin I totally recommend GillianIvy, very great eye for design/composition, especially if you've got an existing theme on a website/profile that you want to keep.

This week has been very sunny in Swansea, it's such a contrast to the stressful and rainy days I've had for the past 9 months. There have been some really great and really tiresome days, where I just felt like throwing in the towel because of the amount of stress I've had this year. :D And finally, it's over.

I had my last Viva (presentation exam thing) last week, and ever since I've just been doing absolutely nothing- well actually, I've been playing Diablo 3, watching Adventure Time (thanks for introducing it to me :icondizziedee:) and just eating like a king. But it feels like I've been doing absolutely nothing, and it's great.

Final Major Project

Dissonance is complete for the most part, I still want to do some tweaking before I let people demo it. It's not a full game, it's an academic project, something incredibly incomplete buggy and imperfect, but that's how much one person can possibly do in nine months without prior knowledge to code and with the edition of concept art and modelling etc.

Here's the trailer video:…

The Rest

This week I still have a few little things to do, like organising the end of year show for our department at uni and just touching up some bits of my project ready to show off on the day- I've been re-editing the textures of Cecilia for a while now, I'm just so picky, but I will be submitting her wireframe to dA very soon.

What Now?

I have time to do stuff! This is AMazing awesome!!!!

On a serious note, I'm going to be spending the next few months creating/improving my portfolio while applying for jobs. I know it's not going to be easy, but I will keep trying.
Think I will finally post something on Polycount, starting up some more character designs and modelling would probably be the best idea.

I've thought about places I might be situated in, and settle down at for jobs- but to be honest, so long as it is within 3 hours drive from my parent's home I won't be complaining much. I know it's hard to get in, especially as an artist and a student who has only just graduated, but I'm hoping that my work has/will pay off.

If you guys are still reading this, I will definitely be going to the next MCM Expo, and will be making another costume, :) I would love to dress as Leo from Tekken and Azula from The Last Airbender- alternatively Luka the vocaloid. It will be pretty sweet. In the worst/best case scenario, where I do get a job and I actually cannot attend, I hope you all will forgive me for my yet-again absence.

Anyhow I'll leave it here. Yes I did mess around with headings even though I never use them- they're just so pretty darn it.

I can change my username!?

Journal Entry: Sat May 19, 2012, 1:25 AM

*Edit: Changed my username after some thought, :D it is now GemmaSuen! Woo, now people know my real name even though it's always been on my page hahaha.*

I checked DA today to find notifications of some people that have changed their usernames! I didn't know about this feature, I guess it's new to premium users.

I've considered making a new account before just to have a different username, but this method will be a lot easier. Plus they redirect people from my old url to the new one. I'd probably change it to 'GemmaSuen' or something similar. For me, dA is partially a portfolio, and this would be beneficial.

But I'm not completely sure, I would like to have an obvious identity- but maybe it would be nice to have a bit of anonymity. Has anyone ever experienced trouble using their real names on websites like deviantART?

Last Haul Before Graduation

Journal Entry: Thu Apr 26, 2012, 2:12 AM

Not long before I graduate now, I'm very excited and scared at the same time. My marks this year have been very good (getting mostly 1sts and 2.1's), so I can't fudge these last few months up now! I have to work my damn hardest to ensure I get the best grade at the end of the year.

I've gotten my results back for my second Viva (major project presentation exam thing) and I got 87%! Woo!

My lecturers tell me that they went to see people at Lionhead Studios, they showed my project to some people and apparently they were impressed, however are not looking for a jack-of-all trades. If they are to hire, it is for someone who is specialised in a particular area, this is something I already knew, and I guess this is the downside in choosing to work solo on my final major project.

I went to the open day at Blitzgames last month to get a really good insight to their workplace, and got feedback for my work. Seems, I will definitely need to spend a few months preparing a portfolio, no matter where I try to apply- they will only be interested if I focus on one or two things.

Anyways, this is just part of my excuses of being rather inactive!

*Edit* A kind person has linked me to journal post that blows mine away by Firemoon77. It brings a rather solid confirmation that investing in Invisible Children's cause is not a waste of money or effort! This is as good as you want to sum your views up. And for myself, I will add that it is good to give support in any kind of way.

I've vaguley seen the KONY2012 video, saw that many people are supporting it. And I was about to support it myself, only I felt I didn't really know enough about it. Should I take the word of just one man?

Well just in case some of you are interested in further details, BoingBoing have posted a video and several links to articles featuring a variety responses from African people about the hype.

->African voices respond to hyper-popular Kony 2012 viral campaign<-

Some of the responses summed up to "It is not as simple as Good vs Evil" and that the KONY2012 video still largely premotes an attitute from Americans to Africans that has existed for years (source). Are they completely helpless? Can only the Americans save them? Is their country in such a dismal mess that they themselves are not trying to prevent that very evil?

Of course they're trying, and apparently community-based organisations like the Northern Uganda's grassroots have already done a great amount. (source)

"It didn't ask its viewers to seek diplomatic pressure on President Museveni's administration." Musa Okwonga
One interesting point (which was pointed out a few times also), is that the African leaders have done very little to stop the Lord's Resistance Army. Perhaps then we should look at pressuring the higher ups?

It is good that Kony2012 got so much publicity, but is apparently an over-simplified view of the real situation. For starters Joseph Kony has not been in Uganda for the past 6 years (source). There are many other ways you can support.  Support the cause to preasure the leaders, support organisations like the Northern Uganda's grassroots.  My views have not changed much from the above, but Invisible Children no longer look as devious as before, they seem to be trustworthy according to excruciating amount of research done by Firemoon77. This doesn't really change my views on how the message is given, but at least I'm more sure about the objectives of Invisible Children :).

Devious Journal Entry

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 8, 2012, 3:06 AM

Anyone cared to be tagged? I don't usually play these games, but considering the lack of activity on my page, I figured I might as well give it a go. :typerhappy:

Tagged by :icondizziedee:

1. You must post the rules.
2. Each person must post 5 things about themselves in their journal
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and create 10 new questions for the people you tag to answer.
4. You have to choose 10 people to tag and post their icons on your journal.
5. Go to their page and tell them you have tagged them.
6. No tag backs
7. No stuff in the tagging section about "you're tagged if you're reading this". You legimately have to tag 10 people.

Part 1: Myself
1. I wrote this out already but accidentally closed my browser. (I'm an idiot)
2. I love raw fish and octopus/squid so much that 3 years ago I had food poisoning from eating it for 3 days straight.
3. I was born and brought up in Wales, but I have a weird mix of an American, English and Welsh accent. This is due from watching too much TV and having parents that could barely teach English.
4. I have goldfish and 2 cats! My mother decided to get a dog, and now their house is usually like a war zone.
5. My circulation is always pretty bad because I rarely get enough exercise, though I don't get fat because my diet is pretty good.

4. What is your biggest fear?  Failure of any kind, especially when I am expected to not fail.
5. What is your ideal job?  To be able to work in a small/indie company that will allow me to do both 2D and 3D art!
6. Where would you rather be stuck Silent hill or Cocoon city?  Um... well I would probably die anyways so why not choose the most disturbing Silent Hill! :XD:
7. Ps3 or Xbox360?   I don't have an xbox, but I would consider it a better gaming platform (I'm a PC gamer)
8. What's the closest item to your left hand side?  A green ruler!
9.  Do you have a zombie survival plan?  Stock up on food, lock the doors and become a cannibal- no wait wait, that's what zombies do.... :noes:
10. What's your favourite colour?  I think it's plum, I've been using it a lot lately. :meow:

Part 3: Questions to answer
1. What is your favourite medium?
2. Do you have any inspirations?

8. Any religious beliefs?
9. What country are you from?
10. What time is it?

Part 4: Tag Targets
I understand that most people I know won't have time to look at this, so I will tag but I don't expect you to fill this out :bounce: it's just a bit of fun for me.

I went to my first proper Comic Convention in Cardiff and also cosplayed properly for the first time! I had a stall to represent my course and university, so I also had business cards to give out. Was pretty busy, but fun!
X-men Cosplay group by GemmaSuen

Properly Cosplaying: I actually took it seriously and tried making my own outfit from materials. I cosplayed Pixie from X-men, and if anyone is interested you can find the progress of how I made my costume here: Part1, Part 2, Part 3.

This is pretty useful if you want to try your hand at it too, though for me it wasn't terribly hard since I studied Design & Technology for A levels and remembered my sewing lessons from school. It will be hard if you've never done anything like that before, but with time and practice one gets better!

I'm hoping to do more for next year, since I found this year to be so much fun! :bounce:

I had an amazing time with :icondizziedee:, :iconkachunjack:, :iconscfantasiaart: and others from :iconcosplaycymrusouth:. Thank you everyone for giving me such a great day! Definitely looking forward to next year.

Note: There is a Comic Expo coming up in Bristol for 13th of May I believe, anyone know much about that?

:UPDATE: Grats to :icononscreenmenu: for the 8k Kiriban! I thought this time I was going to have to skip it because nobody cared :XD: . Unfortunately I'm a tad busy, so I'll have to have a look at it next week! :) Just give me the details, I'll deal with it soon.

Have a nice day!

I haven't done a Kiriban in a while, so I figured now's a good time to do another. I'm giving myself and everybody else some time to see this journal, since the last one was missed by a lot of people. ^^

I'm super duper busy right now, so I have no idea why I'm posting this up. Just felt bored (in the middle of writing up my Dissertation). Some example of the detail I put into the Kiriban right here:
Alsie - Kiriban 4k by GemmaSuen
Infinitio Abeo- 4k Kiriban by GemmaSuen

These kind of killed me since, somehow two people managed to get the same screenshot! :XD: Haha.
Well anyways, I think the reason I want to do a Kiriban is because I'm busy with my own work, and therefore my creativity/ideas have been a little stifled. Need to work on a picture, anything!

So please, if you catch the 8000 views on my page, please remember to screenshot, if you get just '8001', you can try to see if you can get it too. >.<;

I can draw your OC, you, some other character made up on the spot, and I'll try with the background. Also, I love being challenged on art styles (though only with 2D mediums)! So if you want realism, anime, abstract, cartoon, traditional art- I will try them all.

I need a bit of help surveying the gaming community with these particular games.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Silent Hill Homecoming
Calling (wii)

If you have played any of these games, could you please be so kind as to fill in my questionnaire? :dummy:  It's very simple and requires no personal details from you other than your age and gender.

Simply go here to fill it out: Horror Criteria Questionnaire

In perhaps a week or so I'll be posting the results online somewhere (I'll update this journal), it's a neat study and comparison of those three games above. The reason I narrowed it down was so that I could handle the results better for my work.
It's for my third year dissertation, and I'm studying the survival horror in video games and I need some field research :) The dissertation is to help me towards my major project: Dissonance.

Thanks for your time!! ;-)
p.s. sorry if some of the questions are a bit confusing, feel free to write in the comment boxes if you have an opinion you want to express about that particular question.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Sat Dec 24, 2011, 3:30 AM

I'm not dead! I just don't know what to write in these update/journal things. :S

Two weeks ago, I did my Viva (a kind of presentation exam), and I was sooooo nervous/stressed that I hermit myself more than usual. I think it went well- it seemed like I had no real criticisms. I did work on it for 5 days straight. :<

But now I'm given all this spare time, without deadlines and all that, it's a bit of a shock. I'm just lying around these days wondering what I need to do. :s Ever get that feeling that weight has been lifted from your shoulders, and you expect to be super happy and doing all the things you love, but you just can't get out of the working phase, expecting you're doing something wrong because there's not much to do?

:XD: Well guess I'm breaking down or something. I have been playing Zelda: Skyward Sword and working on some drawings lately, they're not related to anything and the quality is actually too poor to put onto dA I think.. :o I should quickly sketch up something for a Christmas Greeting!

I hope everyone is doing well! Merry, Merry Christmas!

^Random furry dude, I kinda think they make cool characters.

Time Concerns- Should I Commission?

Thu Oct 6, 2011, 6:01 PM

I've started the first semester this week, and it turns out it'll be a busy year. A few friends have asked if I would be doing Commissions at some point, I'm still a little undecided. While I'm confident I can do commissions on time, I'm not so confident about my assignment work.

I'm not sure what it's like to be pressured for commissions and pressured to finish off my assignments at the same time. I know that neither are that fun- it might get to the point I'll be doing commissions to put off real life work :XD:.

So here's the thing, if anyone has had experience commissioning, could you let me know what it's like?

How much time you take out of your schedule to draw for dA peeps, and what you recommend/do when you're a generally busy person?

How many commission slots to open up at a time etc.

I know I promised  :iconbsdigitalq: a request picture. But after that, I'm afraid I can't afford any more requests, unless it's a friend's birthday. :<

With that said, I'm in no way assuming everyone wants commissions from me. I'm still a nooblet, and I don't expect anything real soon. :) Just need a bit of advice for the future and ongoing.

Eurogamer was Great!

Thu Sep 22, 2011, 1:53 AM
I'm sorry I didn't update sooner @_@ as soon as I came back I had to do a bunch of things, such as sort out photos and see my family. Finally I have time to sit down and write this.

Eurogamer was great :D I wrote a blog about it if you're interested and have never been:- Part 1:… 2:…
It's incredibly long and rambles on a bit, but I just wanted to post the photos really.

It definitely was a useful experience, I met some great people, namely people like :iconeileenskopnik: who made a great cosplay, and could speak Canontese (chinese dialect). I saw Nolan North (voice actor of N. Drake from Uncharted, and many others) at his talk, and my friends even shook hands with him. It was all around great to be in London. :) I will submit more photos soon, but for now I guess I'm tired of writing about my great experiences haha... good night!

T_T the stream died at the very end, so I don't know if the recording is alright. :D I'll be putting a sped up video together for this as usual.

4k Kiriban goes to two people!!! O_o Somehow :iconevery-stars-fall: AND :iconkaine144: both managed to grab the 4k exactly... how strange DeviantART!

:D So I guess I'll be illustrating their OC's:

Fight by Every-stars-fall and I'm back by Kaine144

:bounce: woo~ grats! I guess I'll be done with these as soon as I can. I've already started, thanks for caring! :XD:

Secondly, I've joined :iconecssercise: as a student to learn CSS/HTML with the help of the mentor :iconkristofferm:. Every now and again, this group opens around 10 spaces for students. It's free to help teach people to code their journals or CSS/html in general. Check it out if you're interested.
I'm really happy about this, as I can finally make a decent looking journal, *cough* this one is so rubbish *cough*. And most importantly get to know how to use real CSS/HTML for future. :dummy:

Updates soon, I've been busy working away on some unfinished pieces, I'll submit these soon! For now, please check the game out.

Chow!
